What a trip! My last post was leaving Cody, Wyoming. I've learned that 5,444.8 miles on a map is a lot different than that many miles actually on the road. A big surprise. Right?
But I'm having a fantastic experience. Just experiencing the heartland of America as I drove through Wyoming, South Dakota, Iowa, and Illinois was a bucket list experience. Not having grown up in a rural setting, I was surprised at just how agricultural America really is.
Even in Wyoming and South Dakota, every flat space along US 20 seemed to be growing something - mostly hay, I think. All done through irrigation.
I had a great interview with artist, author, and American Legion member Charity Maness at the Hot Springs, SD American Legions, and interviews with ABC and NBC in Sioux City, Iowa.
Then it was on to Dubuque and Chicago, where I met with the post commander and staff of American Legion Post 1160 in Chicago, Ridge. We shared experiences about the Legion's Be The One campaign, and they introduced me to the Queen of Hearts game.
I'm loading up and heading for South Bend, Indiana, and on to Toledo, Ohio.
Allez!
I squeezed in a side trip to Mount Rushmore and a double scoop of Thomas Jefferson's original vanilla ice cream recipe.
